We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we
told you about the power and the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
2 Peter 1:16

Many would describe Christmas as celebration of a myth: a “jolly old elf” makes the rounds of the entire world, distributing gifts to worthy children as a follow up to end of the year behavioral admonitions. Some see it as an innocuous cultural exercise that boosts the economy (sorely needed this year) and encourages giving. Others decry this despoiling of the true message of Christmas, pointing out that “Santa” rearranged spells . . .
“Satan.” In reality, Saint Nicholas was a fourth century bishop from Myra, in what is now Turkey (which Paul visited - see Acts 27:5-6):

According to tradition a poor family in Myra had three daughters
who were being courted for marriage but who had no dowries . . . .
The good bishop took it upon himself to supply their dowries,
anonymously slipping bags of gold into their home - some say into
stockings hanging up to dry. He thus rescued them from an other-
wise degrading destiny. When his identity came to light, so began
the adulation of this gift-bearing saint. As a result, he also became
the patron saint of children.

The American Santa came through the Dutch concept of “Sinterklaas,” and was popularized through the 1822 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” by Clement Moore (“‘Twas the night before Christmas . . . .”). So, even this modern story has its roots in reality. We can celebrate this guy, in context. However, the real Christmas story is about God’s unfathomable gift to humankind. As Peter says, this was no “made up myth,” but the glory of the Lord revealed to humble shepherds in an out of the way Judean pasture. As Peter, James and John later witnessed Jesus unveiled in his majestic glory on the mount of transfiguration, so these shepherds witnessed the beginning of the most profound series of events in human history, culminating in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ some 30 + years later. These will only be eclipsed by his return in full glory, to establish his kingdom forever. The glory revealed at his birth, which we commemorate every December, is a preview of that which we will experience for eternity. Have a blessed commemoration!

NEWS AND PRAYER UPDATE:

Joan Goodwin (Susan Nolen’s mom) is recovering back in Williamsburg from the broken leg she suffered last month on her way to Hamilton. Pray that she can soon move from the rehab facility to her home. Pray also for Jim Cox (Putter’s Dad) who was hospitalized just after Thanksgiving with a variety of issues relating to a fall in late October. Pray that he can get into some kind of extended care facility.

Pray for end of the semester issues, for the new CCF leadership team, and for Young Life - Bob Merithew took over 30 kids to fall weekend at Lake Champion last month!

Pray for jobs for those who are looking (especially the Buttons and Jordan Cox), and for health for those who are struggling in that area.

THE QUOTE CORNER

The present-day Santa, in his most secular manifestation,
is divorced from the spiritual moorings and motivation of
the real-life Nicholas. But he still personifies goodness and
and a kind of justice, which might help explain the terror that
arises in some children when they enter his presence. The
evolution of the Nicholas story bears out the overwhelming
need people feel to believe in something greater than them-
selves, even if it means making it up.
