October 2007
The last week of September was a good one for Philadelphia.
Sunday, Phil Bissell - a friend who knows my baseball affinities - called me at 1:30 to let me know that the Marlins had scored seven runs in the top of the first against the Mets, before the Phillies game against the Nationals had even started. By 4:30 Jordan called to give me commentary on the last out of the Phils’ game, which he could watch but I could not. As soon as it was over Terry Hayes beeped in, calling from University of Maryland in College Park, to congratulate me - a very gracious gesture from a true Mets fan.
More significantly (in the light of eternity), I received two communications from Philadelphia folks I hadn’t heard from in decades. Both were contacts through the church website. The first was from Bob Wilson, my best friend in junior high school (1964 - 1966). He wrote:
I've become very active in my church over the last ten years or so, and attended my first session meeting tonite as a new elder. So finding your site tonite was especially fun. Anyway, looks and sounds like things are well for you all and that's great. Just wanted to take a minute and say hi.
Take Care and God Bless - Bob
The second was from Bill Crowther, a guy I knew for only a few years while we were lifeguards at Huntingdon Valley Country Club in the early ‘70's. He wrote:
I recently started thinking about some of my old friends and co-workers at HVCC The first name I googled was yours. It would seem that we have gone down similar paths of self discovery. I accepted Christ shortly after my last year at Temple, was baptized at the Roxborough Baptist church in Phila., married and continued to live and worship in the Philadelphia area till 1995 when we moved to an old dairy farm in Canaan New Hampshire. My wife Lori and I have an adopted daughter, Hannah that just entered the 5th grade. We do not run a dairy farm but do have some sheep, a llama, an alpaca, a couple old horses a dog and some barn cats. We are active in the Faith Baptist Church here in Canaan. (faithbaptisthome.org)
It was a good week for Philadelphia - especially in the light of eternity. Go Phillies!
